Since its inception in 1946, the Cannes Film Festival has drawn the globe’s stars and directorial heavy-hitters to the French Riviera. Every year, 60 nations descend upon the Palais des Festivals, flooding the space of the Soixantième Theatre, the coast, and of course, the legendary 24 steps of the pavilion itself.

As a consequence, the Riviera has developed a reputation for its fashion, which cuts like a breath of fresh air through awards season. The Cannes Film Festival derives power from history. Indeed, on the steps of the Palais and the coast of the Riviera, actors, and actresses embrace the fantasy of Cannes—each, casting themselves anew in its narrative of European elegance.

To reflect on the Cannes Film Festival is to remember a bricolage of its most memorable guests—a 1987 Princess Diana in angelic Catherine Walker, a 1960 Audrey Hepburn with her signature gloves, and Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin in 1974, flag-bearers of the bohemian.

In 2022, international film stars and industry professionals continue to contribute to this fashion legacy. The opening ceremony for the 75th festival saw attendees dress in a full spectrum of colors. There was Katherine Langford, a vision in silver sequinned Prada; hair, combed back in a classic updo and necklace wore backward, the emerald pendant at the nape.

Elsewhere, Rebecca Hall was a supernova in tomato and Fuschia Gucci, feathers at the sleeves and crystals bursting out from the bodice center. And while Julianne Moore began the festival’s first day in black Bottega Veneta, actresses Noomi Rapace and Lashana Lynch chose ivory, wearing Christian Dior and Fendi haute couture respectively.

But boy, have the stars turned up the heat since. Unofficial queen of Cannes Elle Fanning went down the Old Hollywood route once again, wearing a strapless, ballet pink Armani Privé gown, encrusted on the bodice and tulle skirt, flared out below the hips. Viola Davis, meanwhile, looked regal in canary yellow Alexander McQueen. As celebrities continue to walk the Cannes red carpet, we bring you the best of their fashion from France as the festival goes on. Below, is everything they’re wearing so far.
